Default Rates Projected to Soar

New data from the U.S. Education Department confirm that view.

In November, the House of Representatives amended legislation to renew the Higher Education Act with a provision that would extend to three years, from the current two, the “cohort default rate," which gauges the proportion of student loan borrowers who default within a certain time period after they leave college.

The change, proposed by Rep. Timothy Bishop (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), is designed to make the cohort default rate a more realistic assessment of how individual institutions (and lenders) are faring in keeping student borrowers on track to repayment, both to gauge students’ indebtedness and potential failure by colleges in ensuring that their students are getting an affordable and valuable education.

Report: Subpoenas May Be Issued In Lefkow Case

Chicago's chief of detectives, James Molloy, said, "We are looking in many, many directions, but it would be far too early to draw any definitive links."

By Tuesday morning, news articles of the killings had been posted on white supremacist Web sites, along with "RAHOWA!", meaning "racial holy war."

In a discussion on a white nationalist Web site in 2003, members had talked about the case against Hale and posted the Lefkows' home address. Anti-Defamation League official Mark Pitcavage said another white supremacist's short wave radio show last April had discussed killing the judge.

Hale's father, retired East Peoria policeman Russell Hale, dismissed the notion that his son was involved in the slayings, saying he is under constant surveillance and the FBI closely monitors his phone calls and visits with family members.

Affliction needs to be addressed

Thank you for the outstanding awareness article of Feb. 11 regarding bipolar disorder ("Fostering awareness of bipolar disorder"). I am the state director of MOFACT, Missouri Families For Access To Comprehensive Treatment, and we are working tirelessly to smooth out some of the "bumps" described in the article. As noted by Dr. Wang, the triage system for mental health in Missouri is wanting. However, it can be improved greatly.

As the article notes, there is a definite lack of accessible psychiatrists in Missouri (the number is actually 256 per the licensing board and of those, estimates indicate some one-third are less than full-time). Of these psychiatrists, our data indicates that the charge for an office session ranges from $250 to $400, and many are no longer accepting Medicare or Medicaid programs.

Chavez, China, and the coming startup squeeze

Rape and pillage" would be fair descriptors of the economic effects of OPEC's publicly stated acquiescence over today's new oil prices. Oil cost around $14 per barrel a decade ago, but is hovering around the $100 mark now.

Having set the devil of overpricing in motion, he then re-nationalized PdVSA at home, followed by nearly all the oil fields in Venezuela. When this wasn't aggravation enough to keep prices high, he threatened to cut off all oil supplies to either the U.S. or Exxon earlier this month.

China, meanwhile, simultaneously has been on a path to acquire the greatest future oil volume possible from OPEC providers through forward contracts -- done very quietly -- with the similar result of raising futures prices, and then spot prices, of oil.

Higher oil prices have a double-negative effect upon healthy Western economies: They cause gross inflation, and they slow down the economy, even as they are masked as increased GDP -- usually a good thing (oops).

EPD warns residents of possible phone scam in area

The Eureka Police Department has received three phone calls from citizens regarding a phone scam.

EPD Public Information Officer Suzie Owsley said that if three residents have reported the scam, there are probably many more receiving the bogus offer.

The scam artist contacts residents and says he represents an international shipping company and that he will be shipping a package with money and prizes worth more than $10,000.

The caller attempts to ask for personal information, Owsley said. She reminds people not give out any personal information over the phone when on the receiving end of a call.

The best thing to do is to tell the caller, “no thank-you," and hang up, Owsley said.

UPDATE: UK Net Lending, Mortgage Approvals Soften In Dec

LONDON (Dow Jones)--Consumer appetite for debt slipped back in December and mortgage approvals sank to a record low, casting a dark cloud over the outlook for the housing market, data from the Bank of England Wednesday showed. Total consumer lending grew GBP9.1 billion in December. That compared with an upwardly revised GBP9.2 billion and GBP9.5 billion in November and October, respectively. That was still higher than the expectations of economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires last week, who forecast, on average, an GBP8.7 billion gain. But mortgage approvals dropped sharply in December from the previous month, falling to 73,000 - the lowest level since the current series began in January 1999 - from a downwardly revised 81,000 in November. The softening in mortgage approvals suggests that hikes in U.K.

Bhutto's 19-year-old son and her husband to lead party

No doubt that she had an amazing personality but her govt. was dimissed by the army every time. She and her husband (who is now the co chairman of the People's Party) have been charged of quite a few corruption/ money laundering/ murder charges and although they have not been proved yet but to keep it simple I think if not all than there must be few that must be true…but than they all stand above the law….they still are and they will always be. In the end, she (or no one) deserves this. I pray that God gives her peace.

Second, Bashir Ahmad suggested, "They are a people who have no respect for law, rules and discipline. They are good people but a crude people. Now such a nation has nuclear weapons. Nuclear Weapons in the hands of crude and un-sophisticated people (no matter if they are good); is a dangerous scenario".

Exposed: The Long, Cruel Road to The Slaughterhouse

It never ceases to amaze me how hundreds of thousands/millions of people will support this kind of cruelty toward life, by ignoring its existence and by purchasing animal products with the only consideration being point-of-purchase price tag, yet become outraged by pregnant females in crisis undergoing safe, legal abortions, and support candidates who want to make abortion illegal and unsafe once again.

Twisted thinking is all I can say …
