| Florida Schools To Teach Evolution as ‘Scientific Theory’
Following numerous public complaints, though, the state Department of Education suggested the wording change to clearly label every scientific law and theory — not just about evolution — as such. The seven-member board adopted the alternate proposal, and therefore the standards, by a 4-3 vote. Religious advocates wanted more. They proposed a so-called "academic freedom" amendment to counter what they say is the "dogmatic" tone of the standards that call evolution "the fundamental concept underlying all of biology." The amendment would have given teachers explicit permission "to engage students in a critical analysis of that evidence." But supporters of the standards and a majority of the board said the proposal was anything from unnecessary to redundant to suspect.
Clinton will be at fairgrounds
The Nueces County Democratic Party had announced late Sunday that Clinton was tentatively scheduled to appear at Whataburger Field. That announcement, however, came as a surprise to the folks at Whataburger Field. J.J. Gottsch, president of the Corpus Christi Hooks baseball team, said Monday that the stadium hadn't heard from either the local Democrats or Clinton's camp. "We have opening day in 47 days and here we are spending half the morning working on something we know nothing about," Gottsch said. Susan Reeves, an elections administrator for the Nueces County Democratic Party, took some of the blame for the premature announcement. She said rumors of the Clinton appearance began circulating as early as Friday. She was asked to send a note to the party's Web master, announcing that Democrats had a tentative location for Clinton's appearance.
Trial looms in transfer of DWP funds
The city of Los Angeles lost a key legal argument Monday and now will have to go to trial to defend the annual transfer of about $30million in Department of Water and Power water-service revenue to the city's general fund. The ruling by a Superior Court judge to deny the city's motion for summary judgment comes as another potential setback for an already cash-strapped city facing a $155 million budget deficit by June 30 and as much as $500 million next year. Because of the uncertainty of the transfers, the city hasn't included them in the current budget, nor in its financial projections. But the DWP case is set to go to trial March 26 and, pending the outcome, the utility has set aside $63.3 million representing two years of surplus water revenue slated for transfer to city coffers.
Letters 2/11: Gas costs cause problems
Rising gas prices are the single factor influencing the reduction of my consumer spending. My "fun" budget was gone in May. In September I began cutting into my food and clothing budgets to pay for gas. I make a decent living, yet I find myself drowning financially. As gas prices continue to rise, so does the cost of everything else. In my little town, the price of groceries has more than doubled. Clothing costs have increased.Does anyone really think the oil companies would suffer if they only made $30 billion in profits? .

Chase Bank Accuses Florida Law Firms of Running Debt-Relief Scam
Chase Bank USA is suing two Coral Springs, Fla., attorneys specializing in reducing consumer debt and South Florida affiliates, claiming they are engaging in blatantly illegal and fraudulent practices. The federal suit filed Friday in Wilmington, Del., accuses Hess Kennedy Chartered, lawyer Laura Hess, Edward Kennedy, affiliated companies and others of using "an unlawful debt elimination scheme" relying on lawsuits challenging valid credit card charges. Attorney Jeffrey Campos of Coral Springs and the Legal Debt Center, which has the same Coral Springs address and suite number as Hess' law firm, also are named as defendants. In addition, attorneys general in Florida, North Carolina and West Virginia are looking into Hess Kennedy's operations, and the Florida Bar has moved to suspend Hess' license.

McCain’s life experiences will suit road ahead
John McCain was not my first choice. Or even the second or third. He'd be far more appealing with a Southern conservative as a running mate — former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, or Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, to name three. But conservative running mate or not, Mitt Romney's class-act exit leaves McCain without serious challenge for the nomination. And as both Romney and McCain noted in same-day speeches to the Conservative Political Action Conference, this election is not about shades of gray. "Elections in this country are fought within margins of small differences," said McCain. "This one will not be. We are arguing about hugely consequential things." Romney's departing words defined the immediate course for conservatives.

Finding Common Ground
Yard sales, donations and an annual dog party have helped raise some $19,000, enough money to pour the 5,000-square-foot slab of concrete that will provide the foundation for the park. But the concrete is only phase one, according to Arvak Marshall, youth minister at Cedar Grove. They still need to raise money for ramps, pipes and a fence. "We just want [kids] to feel loved," said Marie Lilly, a youth leader at Cedar Grove. "We want to provide a safe environment for kids to have fun. Around here, there’s not much to do but get in trouble." If You Build it,Will They Come? Skateboarding can bring trouble. It started as a counter-culture sport, and the rebel attitude of boarders is still common as they glide through no skate zones from shopping malls to playgrounds.
