| As scanners shrink, their tax uses grow
It's tax time, and for management consultant Eric Ochieng, that used to mean spreadsheets, receipts, and other scattered documents. But now Ochieng handles his digital record-keeping with a portable document scanner that comes with software for categorizing images, whether it's a business card or a credit card statement. Ochieng says he also tracks all of his travel expenses, scanning in receipts and recording out-of-pocket and business costs. And at the end of the year, he runs ad hoc reports that he gives to his accountant. "I have up-to-date information about expenses incurred, and immediate access to receipts and related notes, which are saved on my laptop," says Ochieng. That clunky scanner, formerly a heavy flatbed machine, has downsized to portable document scanner that can easily fit into a briefcase and is typically made to scan receipts, business cards, and other small papers, as well as for letter-size documents.
SCIENTISTS CREATE THREE PARENT EMBRYO
The breakthrough came from a team of scientists at Newcastle University who experimented on 10 embryos unsuitable for IVF treatment. They successfully replaced faulty mitochondria - which supplies cellular energy and controls cell growth - from the mother with undamaged cells from a female donor. The embryos were then allowed to develop for five days before one of them was closely analysed and the transplant was deemed to be a success. Scientists insist the baby would not inherit the donor female's characteristics, as the transplanted mitochondria would not have any effect on the child's personality or appearance. .

Fears over Wal-Mart bank further ILC bill
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. says it's finished trying to obtain a charter that would allow it to offer financial services, but it hasn't convinced Congress, which is working on a bill to keep retailers and other commercial entities from entering the banking business.Banking associations and consumer groups have pressured Congress to act quickly on legislation that would prohibit commercial companies from acquiring industrial loan companies charters and prevent existing commercial ILCs from expanding into branch banking, among other things. The House passed the bill in May by a 371-16 vote. On Wednesday, the Senate Banking Committee approved the bill by a vote of 11-10, but because the vote did not represent a quorum, it faces another committee vote.Amid the legislation and ongoing debates on the issue, Wal-Mart opened a bank in Mexico, but says it no longer has U.S.
Britney Spears
Sam Lutfi was finally served the restraining order yesterday that effectively requires him to stay 250 feet from Britney Spears and have no contact with her whatsoever. The restraining order was set to expire today, but the judge in the case extended it to March 17, according to the AP: In court papers, Jeffrey Wexler, an attorney for her father, James Spears, wrote that "after three weeks of apparently evading service," Lutfi was served at 11 a.m. outside his Los Angeles apartment. The order, which requires Lutfi to stay 250 yards away from Spears and her home, was set to expire Friday. Wexler had asked for the order to be extended. Poor Sam Lutfi. He must miss Britney Spears. I bet he walks in on random pap smears just to remember the good times. Surprisingly none of the women really cared until Sam started throwing Cheetos at them and screaming "Where's the checkbook?! I'll feed you to Satan!" Then it got a little weird.

Edwards Announces Paid Family Leave Plan
LEBANON, N.H. - When it comes to helping parents take time off from work, Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards is raising the stakes. The former North Carolina senator on Tuesday proposed spending $2 billion a year to help states create family leave programs that offer workers at least eight weeks of paid time off to care for a newborn or ill family member. The proposal is similar to those offered by his rivals, but Edwards would put up more money - New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's plan calls for $1 billion a year; Illinois Sen. Barack Obama proposes $1.5 billion. Edwards also would set a national goal of eight weeks of paid leave for all by 2014. "It's really important for parents for families to be able to take this leave, to be able to do it and not lose their income, which is a huge drain on millions of families in this country,'' he said at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.
