NAB, Telstra in mobile services

WITH Australian banks under pressure to bring mobile banking to market, National Australia Bank has teamed up with Telstra to develop an SMS-based platform, which may be accessible only to customers of both companies.

The pair started working on the project more than 12 months ago, and it is understood NAB customers who want to use the service may have to be on the Telstra network.

A spokeswoman for NAB did not rule out that the service would only be available for the bank's customers using Telstra mobiles. But "if NAB was to develop a solution, it's unlikely to be only on one carrier's network", she said.

The banks are expected to launch some sort of mobile banking services this year, as consumer appetite for the technology grows, and the pressure has been on the big four banks since ANZ revealed plans to roll out a platform later this year.

Investigation discovers sex offender working at daycare center

Louisville, Ky. (WHAS-TV) -- A local daycare is under investigation by the state after it was discovered that a registered sex offender was working there.

It's a parent's worst nightmare; a convicted sex offender with a scary past working in their child's daycare center. Because of the investigation, parents are now pulling their children out of the facility. WHAS11 News also discovered that he's not the only one with a criminal history working there.

The man's name is Joseph Gibson and he began working at The Growing Place child care center in the highlands about six weeks ago. Gibson was fired Tuesday. But that was just the beginning.

It takes a lot of trust to drop off one of the most important people in your life at preschool. Parents of children who attend The Growing Place say that their trust was shattered when we told them about Joseph Gibson, who has been working around their children for hours every weekday.

BACK IN IRAQ: THE 'WHORES OF WAR'

EVEN FOR Blackwater, it was an atrocity too far. If an Iraqi government report is to be believed, Blackwater, a US mercenary company which is unofficially the world's largest "for hire" private army, indiscriminately and without provocation opened fire earlier this month on civilians in a Baghdad street, killing at least 20 people.

Iraq immediately revoked the firm's licence to operate in the country and moved to expel its staff and prosecute those responsible for the shootings, but Blackwater's activities have since resumed.

This coincides with the release of a US Embassy report on the September 16 shooting, obtained by the Washington Post and described by a State Department official as a "first blush" account. It details the events, as given by Blackwater guards, and has stirred controversy in Iraq and Washington and prompted an inquiry into the role of Blackwater and other private security firms in Iraq.

Rivera Takes on Anti-Immigrant Fervor in 'His Panic'

No one calls me Jerry, and you can't call me Jerry unless you knew me before 1950.' "

Rivera says the Hispanic assimilation experience is no different from that of previous immigrants.

"Many of the most fervent anti-immigrant activists are themselves the children or grandchildren of immigrants," he says. "The style changes, the accents change, the geographical antecedents change, but it's the same. You can track headline for headline the response to the Irish wave of immigration in the mid-19th century to the reaction of the Minutemen and similar radical anti-immigration groups today."

Those people who say they're worried about border security are being disingenuous, Rivera says.

"Are you really concerned about 'border security,' or are you concerned about the changing demographic face of the United States? [For] example, if it is terrorism that you are concerned about and you want this fence built between the United States and Mexico, why don't you want the same fence built between the United States and Canada? Why isn't there this clamor ...

Ontario threatens trade barriers for South Korean vehicles

From there the gov't can begin imposing duties on anything imported. In a matter of months, Ontario will not have any imports unless there is a huge tariff imposed. Imagine the benefits to union labour? Tons and maybe more than tons. The final, master stroke would be to impose 100% duties on food imports. You can get the 100 mile diet along with great social benefits. And with all of the new gov't income generated by the increase in employment, the 100 mile diet (and anything else that could or should be subisidized), will and presto, Ontario has a tight, closed door economy. And think of all of those ads that the province runs in various trade and business magazines about Ontario 'being open for business' and stuff like that: they will save $000's of Ks in advertising they won't need anymore because Ontario will be closed.
