He said he also believes oil companies are gouging the public."I don't see too many industries pulling in several billion dollars in profits each quarter," he said.Amie Swope, another NHS teacher, said she hoped gas prices wouldn't rise to $4, but even if they did that wouldn't curtail her summer plans."I would not change my summer travel plans," she said. Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)
John Russo has been a victim of identity theft. So when he was asked to fork over a photo ID just to be seated at an IHOP pancake restaurant, he flipped. "'You want my license? I'm going for pancakes, I'm not buying the Hope diamond,' and they refused to seat us," Russo said, recounting his experience this week at the Quincy (Mass.) IHOP. The restaurant now has agreed to reverse the policy of requiring customers to turn over their driver's licenses before they can order - a rule that was enacted to discourage "dine and dash" thefts. WCVB-TV in Boston reported the Quincy restaurant's policy had been enacted without corporate approval. IHOP Corp., based in Glendale, Calif., released a statement Monday night to WCVB that said an employee felt the policy could eliminate the problem of people leaving without paying.
On Native Ground
DUMMERSTON, Vt. -- Entergy, the energy conglomerate that owns of Vermont Yankee, the nuclear power plant that sits about a dozen miles from my doorstep, has launched an advertising blitz touting nuclear power as being "green." The ad campaign was timed to coincide with the start of the Vermont Legislature's 2007-08 session. Lawmakers are currently discussing the effects of climate change on Vermont and what can be done to reduce the production of carbon dioxide and other gases that contribute to global warming. 'According to a study at MIT, it would take 300 new nuclear reactors here and 1,500 worldwide to have a real impact on greenhouse gasses. That means building a new one every six months for 60 years... .' The nuclear power industry has jumped into the climate change debate and is touting nuclear power as an environmentally friendly energy source.
Romney suspends campaign
Mitt Romney announced he is suspending his presidential bid, all but annointing John McCain as the Republican nominee. In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, Romney said he didn't want a Democrat to win the White House. "If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and frankly I would be making it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. Frankly, in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," he said. "This is not an easy decision for me. I hate to lose. My family, my friends and our supporters... many of you right here in this room have given a great deal to get me where I have a shot at becoming President.
Home destroyed in Elbow Lake fire
They have lost everything and all you people can do is trash Jeff. True his personality leaves something to be desired, but think of the other people that were in that house at the time of the fire. Thank God that it happened during the day and not at night because they would have been dead. Jeff has a lot of enemies and very few friends. If you know him personally, then you know what I am saying. I heard a rumor that the Salvation Army wouldn't help the woman with clothing, shelter, etc. because of who she is related to. That is pathetic. If even the Salvation Army won't help in her time of need why are they even in Fergus Falls? They were there for the fire and police, but they won't help with the basic needs of this woman during this tragic time. Isn't that what the Salvation Army is for? She had to go to Alexandria for help from the Red Cross.
Wall Street flouts 'Super Bowl Rule' as indexes decline
Stocks lost ground Monday, as Wall Street ignored the Super Bowl rule. The rule suggests that the stock market will do well in a year after one of the original National Football League teams wins the Super Bowl. Despite Sunday's surprise win by the New York Giants, an original NFL team, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 108.03 points, to 12,635.16. .
Pret-à-rapporter: saving your pound
I've spent the past couple of weeks trying to train myself not to spend. January is always a dodgy month, but this year it seems exquisitely un-chic to be thinking about splashing out on new stuff when all we're hearing are tidings of financial doom lurking just round the corner. .
