Clinton's confidence dwindles as aides face her campaign's possible ...

The US is in a serious crisis now. A strong and capable leader is more needed than ever. One should remember history. Germany elected Adolf Hitler in the aftermath of horrible hyper-inflation and wide-spread domestic discontent. What Hitler did to Germany and to Europe is not something to easily write off as "old" world. It would be too costly to write off Obama one day. It would be just too late.

G W Bush already made enough serious mistakes, thanks to those who voted him in, and the Supreme Court judges who voted him in.

Jason Franchuk - DAILY HERALD

I think a lot of times coaches and fans say he's in that spot so he can't do this or he can't do that. My philosophy is that you put guys out there and try to make the other team figure out what position he's really playing.

"And let them deal with it. I think you kind of help the player's confidence level that way."

Not that Tavernari needs much instruction with the esteem of his game. But he's tried to advance his game beyond that of a catch-and-shoot mercenary, as he was last year. He started dreadfully slow before catching fire in league play.

Rose concedes that Tavernari is an extremely valuable player because of that self-assuredness, but that trait can come back to bite player and coach if not harnessed correctly.

Tavernari's sure that if he misses 10 shots in a row, the 11th is destined to go in.

In Carson: Man receives probation in mail theft

One of two men charged in the theft of mail from west side Carson City mailboxes was sentenced to three years probation on Tuesday.

Dylan Gregory, 22, pleaded to two counts of gross misdemeanor opening, reading or publishing a sealed letter or telegram.

In addition to three years probation, Gregory must serve 80 hours of community service, abstain from alcohol and drugs and adhere to a curfew.

Gregory was arrested early Dec. 9 along with co-defendant David Scott Killen, 23, and Tristan Ledford, 19, both of Carson City, after a homeowner spotted them rifling through mailboxes.

When police pulled their vehicle over, Killen was at the wheel, and Gregory and Ledford were passengers.

Mail found inside the vehicle and statements made after their arrests indicated the trio was looking for credit card applications and holiday cards containing money, according to court records.

The Editorial Board

The resolution before the council today notes that the committee studying a charter revision was split over a referendum on single-member districts (as is the City Council). It also notes that the U.S. Department of Justice has not weighed in on the matter, which is imperative in a state subject to the Voting Rights Act.

A plan that dilutes the potential for African Americans on the council likely would not pass federal scrutiny. Also, it would almost certainly provoke a lawsuit by black voters, which could be time-consuming and costly.

Cole's resolution says the Charter Revision Committee that proposed a referendum must recommend a specific plan before a vote is held. It says the committee also should lay out a plan for redistricting after the 2010 census and submit it to the Justice Department for comment.
